Timeline is here. Lots of politics, law enforcement, wars, coming over on the mayflower, and being burned as a witch, are the 'highlights'.
The most important bit (The ones shown in the show) is his history with a previous student Carl Robinson. He buys Carl to save him from being taken. Is Carl's friend and his teacher. He's also married to the daughter of the man who owned Carl before, and who killed Carl.
When Carl gets ready to head North, Matt tells him to leave it alone, and that if those men - the ones who are Carl's murderers and tormentors, but are Matthew's brother and father in law- get killed he'll go hunting for him.
Carl doesn't intend to kill them, but Matthew doesn't know that when he finds him dead. So he goes looking. It's almost 150 years before he finds him. When he does Matthew's working for the FBI and Carl's just been seen taking a head in public, in a baseball stadium- oh yeah, and Carl's a famous baseball player at the time.
Matthew's vowing Vengance, Carl's angry, and Duncan's in the middle trying to get his friend (Carl) out of trouble. Duncan and Matthew butt heads a few times. Meanwhile a guy who had nothing to do with it's taking the rap for the murder Carl committed, and is going down for it. Carl almost lets him but Duncan does the Duncan thing and makes Carl see how that's a bad idea.
McCormick sees Carl convincing the guy he's got a life worth leaving and not to throw it away for a crime he didn't commit, and loosens up enough to listen. Carl, meanwhile, looses enough of his pissed off to EXPLAIN that he didn't mean to kill those people way back when in the south.
They don't kill each other. Instead McCormick and MacLeod work together. Duncan takes the murder weapon in, and McCormick 'interrogates' Duncan to get Carl's location. Once they go there they stage a shootout to get Carl shot out and dead, then Matthew and Duncan break him out of the Morgue.
That, as they say, is pretty much that.
